On the Day After in Harrisonville

ThedayafterScenes from the 1983 post-apocalyptic movie The Day After were filmed in and around Harrisonville. The movie is about a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. It depicts the aftermath of nuclear attacks near Harrisonville and the surrounding areas.

The movie was made for television and aired on ABC. It was seem by more than 100 million people on its first broadcast. It won two Emmy Awards.

    It was an exciting few days for Harrisonville.
    Some filming was done at the Southeast corner of the square and the Western Auto sign was a prop. Some local residents were used as extras.
