9 a.m. Cheryl Klein: “The Big Stuff: Five Things Editors Want to See in Every Story”

What elements are common to all great stories—and does your book have them? In this talk, Cheryl will offer solid examples of the things editors and agents are looking for in your work and practical takeaways for incorporating those effectively within your manuscript.

10 a.m. Katy Beebe and Cheryl Klein: “Query Letters: Right and Wrong”

Cheryl and Katy compare and contrast a terrible sample query letter with the actual letter that led to the publication of Katy’s picture book Brother Hugo and the Bear (Eerdmans, 2014). There will also be time for Q & A.

11 a.m.-12 p.m. Cheryl Klein and Katy Beebe: First Pages

Cheryl and Katy will read the first pages of anonymously submitted manuscripts and offer craft-based comments on them, providing all writers with valuable tips on how to improve that all-important first page. There will also be time for Q&A. Writers who wish to participate should bring three copies of the first 250 words of their manuscript, double-spaced, with the title and genre listed on top (Picture book/ Easy Reader / Middle Grade / Young Adult / Realistic / Fantasy). The author’s name should not be included on the page.

Attendees will have the opportunity to send a query to Cheryl Klein after the program.
